Most kitchen remodels that run long don't run long because of the construction. They run long because decisions were still being made after the old kitchen was already gone. The best thing you can do for your schedule and your budget is to settle the big questions before demolition — and there are fewer of them than people expect.
Start with the layout, because everything else follows from it. Are you keeping the sink, range, and refrigerator where they are, or moving them? Moving plumbing and gas lines is entirely possible, but it adds cost and time, and it's the single biggest variable in a kitchen budget. Decide whether you want an island or a peninsula, how many people need to work in the kitchen at once, and where you actually drop groceries and mail. A layout that fits how you live will matter more every day than any finish you choose.
Then make your selections — cabinets, countertops, backsplash, flooring, sink and faucet, appliances, lighting, and hardware — and get them ordered. Cabinets and stone counters commonly have lead times of several weeks. If they're ordered before demolition, they arrive while the room is being prepared. If they're ordered after, the kitchen sits empty while you wait.
Appliances deserve their own mention because they drive the cabinetry. A 36-inch range, a panel-ready refrigerator, or a built-in wall oven each needs a specific opening, and cabinets are built around exact model dimensions. Choose the appliances first, then design the cabinets around them.
Be honest with yourself about budget, and keep some of it in reserve. In older Westchester homes especially, opening a wall can reveal outdated wiring, old plumbing, or framing that needs attention. A contingency set aside for what the walls reveal keeps a surprise from becoming a crisis.
Finally, plan for life without a kitchen. A small temporary setup elsewhere in the house — a microwave, a coffee maker, the refrigerator if it can be moved — makes the weeks of construction far easier. We'll talk through that plan with you before we start, along with the schedule, the work hours, and how the rest of your home will be protected.
